How smoking can affect Dental implants?

We all know that smoking is an utterly bad habit. The general idea we have about the impact of smoking on oral health is the discoloration it can cause to our teeth. Not just that!

The tobacco in the cigarettes slows down the healing ability of your body and immunity. A compromised immune system makes your body susceptible to gum diseases and this might eventually lead to gum recession. So make sincere attempts to quit smoking.

Smoking is strictly asked to be stopped 2 months prior to a dental implant procedure. And about 6-8 months after a dental implant procedure. Smoking can cause the failure of dental implants. Studies have shown that the osseointegration rate is way slower in people who smoke than in people who don't. The success of a dental implant depends upon the osseointegration of the implant. Poor osseointegration leads to implant failure.
